Lifestyle Illustration of the 60s

Lifestyle Illustration of the 60s

The 1960s was an optimistic era of unprecedented change, and its heady zeitgeist was captured in the amazing range of artwork that adorned the magazines of the time. Lifestyle Illustration of the 60s is a colossal survey of magazine artwork from the Swinging Sixties. It not only provides revelatory insight into the extraordinary artistic talents of the illustrators featured--such as Austin Briggs, Lynn Buckham, Antonio Lopez and Coby Whitmore--but also tellingly elucidates the social aspirations of this era of political optimism and sexual freedom. Featuring over 1,000 gloriously inventive and stylistically diverse illustrations, Lifestyle Illustration of the 60s traces the decade's dizzyingly swift evolution from the homemaking ethos of romantic coupledom to the stylish liberation of mini-skirted Chelsea girls and the psychedelic palette that evolved towards the decade's close, conjuring a fabulous and euphoric pageant of 1960s pop culture from rediscovered artworks by the very best illustrators of the day. An inspirational sourcebook for contemporary designers and fans of 1960s culture, Lifestyle Illustration of the 60s provides a wonderful, nostalgic adventure into an aspirational world of stylishly sophisticated living, revealing just how much life has changed in the intervening decades.

What People Wore When: A Complete Illustrated History of Costume from Ancient Times to the Nineteenth Century for Every Level of Society

What People Wore When combines the studies of two classic nineteenth-century illustrators Auguste Racinet and Friedrich Hottenroth for the first time. Their works are presented first by chronology and then by subject, so that illustrators, historians, and students alike can choose to follow the path of fashion through the centuries, or study in detail the contrasting styles of individual clothing and accessories. Silhouettes reveal the shape of style through the ages, detailed cross-references draw attention to recurring motifs, and navigation bars help the researcher to travel the complex chronology of costume.

With authoritative narrative from leading experts in the history of costume, extraordinary contemporary quotes that reveal the impact of style in its day, detailed annotation, and an extensive glossary, the book provides a magnificent study of the rich vocabulary of style through the ages.

Jill Martin's Ultimate Outfit Checklist
How to be happy with your outfit every time you get dressed

1) Only wear it if you’d be psyched if the ex-boyfriend who dumped you ran into you while you were wearing it.
2) Only wear it if it makes you feel confident enough to ace a job interview.
3) Only wear it if it stands out just enough to get you noticed. While you might not want to scream, “Look at me!” in a fire engine–red dress, you don’t have to wear only head-to-toe black, either. Try adding some color as an accent with a scarf, or some great jewelry, or even metallic shoes or a unique bag for a change.
4) Only wear it if you’re comfortable that it’s you exactly as you see yourself. Wearing pants when you really feel more comfortable in skirts and dresses (or vice versa) just to change up your wardrobe is not necessary. You know what you feel and look good in, and it’s okay to stick with that look.
5) Only wear it if the fabric feels soft on your skin. Don’t wear it if it’s at all itchy, because it’ll distract you and make you uncomfortable all day.
6) Only wear it if it’s going to keep you warm enough. Showing some skin is sexy, but in the winter, try a sexy neckline instead of bare arms.
7) Only wear it if it fits you properly. If it’s too big or too small, it won’t flatter your figure and you’ll be trying to adjust yourself all day. Again, distracting and uncomfortable!
8) Only wear it if it doesn’t make you look like you tried too hard. While it’s important that everything you’re wearing goes well together, you don’t want to look too matchy-matchy. Avoid matching your shoes to your belt to your bag to your hair accessories.
9) Only wear it if it’s appropriate for the location, activity, or venue. There’s no need to wear high heels to the company picnic. Not only will you look out of place, but you won’t be able to participate in any of the day’s events.
10) Only wear it if it represents your generation, meaning you don’t look like you’re wearing your mother’s clothes — or your daughter’s, for that matter. Just because micro-minis are in for the teen set does not mean that you should necessarily follow that trend.
Jill Martin Reveals Her Fashion Discoveries in an Amazon-Exclusive Interview

What was the biggest fashion discovery you made while you were writing Fashion For Dummies?
While following the trends is always fun, you’ll look your most beautiful and stylish if you stay true to your personality and dress to flatter your body type.
Has your style changed at all because of this book?
Well, maybe not changed entirely, but it definitely evolved and got more refined. While I used to have an overflowing closet with tons of different looks, now I have a cleaned-out and organized closet that’s narrowed down to the more classic look that best expresses my style.
Is there any one fashion rule that you would advise people of across the board, regardless of style or body type?
Yes! Invest wisely and think long-term when it comes to your basic and staple items. It’s okay to spend a little more on these pieces, because you’ll have them in your wardrobe for years. Likewise, look for bargains when buying super trendy items. You won’t have these for more than a season or two, so there’s no need to spend too much.
What is the biggest splurge you ever made on your wardrobe, and was it worth it?
I bought this amazing Chanel bag. I had no business spending that kind of money at the time, but I had to have it. And, yes, it was worth it because it’s a classic that will never go out of style. I’ve been using it for years and will continue to do so. I have more than gotten my money’s worth.
What is the best bargain you ever found?
I found a couple of beautiful rhinestone broaches at a flea market once. I use them all the time. I wear one on my jean jacket pocket, and the other I pin onto a formal dress to give it a vintage look.

We want to establish a different quality online shopping marketplace in New Zealand, a place for small artists and craftsmen to get online, in a quick and affordable way. Moreover, any income go towards further advertising and development of the project, not to finance our operation. We truly believe in our way, so we will do everything to make it work!

The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine

The renowned Israeli historian revisits the formative period of the State of Israel. Between 1947 and 1949, over 400 Palestinian villages were deliberately destroyed, civilians were massacred, and around a million men, women, and children were expelled from their homes at gunpoint. Denied for almost six decades, had it happened today it could only have been called "ethnic cleansing". Decisively debunking the myth that the Palestinian population left of their own accord in the course of this war, Ilan Pappe offers impressive archival evidence to demonstrate that, from its very inception, a central plank in Israel's founding ideology was the forcible removal of the indigenous population. This book is indispensable for anyone interested in the Middle East.

*UPDATE* some stick up the ass cuz my photos suck photographer thinks that an obviously photoshopped picture labeled "photoshop" and put in a "digital manipulation" portfolio is being dishonest. luckily, none of the other INTELLIGENT people have been fooled into thinking that i actually made the cover of elle.

at least not yet. gotta keep working for that.

i found through FD Toys a little app that makes pretend magazine covers. its nice enough to put a picture of yourself in and have some fun pretending youre on the cover of "millionaires weekly", but after running this picture through, i didnt feel it did it any justice.

an hour of work later, amidst some frustration of not being able to find the fonts i wanted, my girlfriend/model made the cover of ELLE magazine.

its amazing what the internet and photoshop can accomplish.

I was going through my magazines the other day when I found these two I had worked on in 2008.

Basically my cousin Katie Greengrass is a fashion stylist and I ended up talking to her in the summer of 2008 about how much I loved photography. She got me down to meet Simon Lipman who I consider a great mentor to me and a great friend. We did some work for Sterling down at Brixton home studios and it was pretty awesome. This was the final copy ready for the magazine.

As you can see I've been credited in size 2 font but still... its a start.
